Ho’oponopono: A Simple Practice for Reconciliation and Restoration

What is Ho'oponopono?

As I’ve been reflecting on the intensity in the weather lately, both emotionally and literally, I feel called to share a powerful practice that has surfaced repeatedly for me over the past week in yoga classes and conversations.


It comes from an ancient Hawaiian practice called ho’oponopono (pronounced ho-oh-pono-pono), in which a simple prayer is repeated:


I’m sorry. 

Forgive me. 

Thank you. 

I love you.


This modern four-phrase version is a simplified adaptation of the traditional Hawaiian practice, which was historically guided within families and communities to restore harmony.


The Meaning Behind Ho'oponopono

Ho’oponopono is a practice of reconciliation and restoration. At its heart, it invites us to reflect on the places within us that may be needing correction or forgiveness - with ourselves, with others, or with life - and to gently move toward responsibility, compassion, and repair.


It asks us to notice where we may have been hard on ourselves or others. Where we may be carrying something unresolved. And where taking responsibility, working toward clearing, and offering forgiveness might gently support a return to greater harmony and ease.


Practicing Ho'oponopono

This practice can take many forms, including repeating the phrases silently, speaking them aloud, listening through music, journaling, or weaving them into movement. It can be directed toward a specific situation, whether a current or past experience, a person, or simply offered as a way to cultivate greater harmony internally and externally.


What I appreciate most about this practice is how quickly it can create a meaningful shift.


Even brief moments of intentional reflection and reset can change the way we move through our interactions and days.


Here are two simple methods I practiced this week that felt especially impactful:

  • Move gently through a yoga practice while listening to a musical version of the prayer. Song link: Ho’oponopono (108 repetitions). This song variation repeats: I love you. I’m sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you.

  • From a comfortable seated position with a tall spine, place one hand on your heart and one on your stomach. Slowly bring to mind what may be asking for your attention, and repeat to yourself: I’m sorry. Forgive me. Thank you. I love you.


Choosing Forgiveness, Gratitude, and Love

In a world where there is constant turmoil and uncertainty if we look for it, there is also forgiveness, reconciliation, gratitude, and love, especially when we choose to practice them.
